Terraseeding, the process of applying compost blankets with grass seed injected pneumatically, offers superior benefits compared to traditional seeding methods. Adding organics through fresh whole compost rich in microbes, improves soil health, enhances organic content, and promotes vigorous growth.
During the construction process, ground disturbance often brings dormant seed stock to the surface, some of which has been inactive for decades. However, certain standard specifications carried over from turf grass and sod planting do not support the long-term establishment and vitality of native grass species. Tilling amendments to a depth of 6″ prove ineffective as root zones extend much deeper. Instead, concentrated undiluted compost directly in contact with the seed fosters more favorable long-term establishment.
Timing is crucial in the terraseeding process. The prime window for non-irrigated Terraseeding is November 15 to March 15. Microbially rich compost works throughout the winter, consuming salts and improving soil conditions. Combine this with cool spring temperatures and seasonally consistent rains, and you have the perfect environment for robust establishment. Cool season grasses germinate first getting a deep root structure prior to the summer heat provides shade and retains soil moisture, while warm season grasses come into season. Ensuring complete seed development before the initial cutting each season is critical for native species natural regeneration.
Native species are designed to create a new crop of seed to thicken the grass stand. However, cutting native grass too early due to spring rains results in the spread of immature, non-viable seeds, preventing the natural seeding process. Ensuring seed maturity and viability before cutting is vital to the long-term management of native lands.
Although hydroseeding attempts to replicate microbial inoculation and improve organic content, even with specialized additives like Biotic earth or Proganix, it falls short. Pneumatically applied fresh active compost from a screened pile directly to disturbed soil provides maximum benefits for living organisms. Additionally, hydroseeding introduces petrochemical-derived NPK, adding more salt to the soil. Compost, on the other hand, meets organic alternatives that actively consume salts making nutrients soluble for photosynthesis.
In fact, studies conducted in Northern California reveal that a single application of compost initiates a carbon sequestration chain reaction that lasts for decades. Thus, using compost and mulch on several
types of land may be the most powerful weapon in the battle against climate change. Soils hold more
carbon than the atmosphere and all plant and animal life combined, making the use of carbon sinks in the
world’s soils a crucial strategy in reducing climate change impacts caused by human activities and soil
degradation.

IRRIGATED Terraseeding can be conducted all year and during dormancy the microbial
inoculation will help improve soil health for vigorous growth in spring.
NON IRRIGATED Terraseeding, We recommend Dormant season seeding Nov. 1- March 1.
The development of cool season grasses to provide shade and Retaining soil moisture for
the development of warm season grasses. Seeding outside this window disrupts this critical
progression which creates thick full growth. The compost ignites growth in all existing plant
material including present weeds, with no germination possible in hot dry conditions weeds
take over negating the benefits of the immediate growth and development.
Investment in irrigation infrastructure Proves to be the most effective way to terraseed
outside dormant seeding. Above ground temp systems are a great way to achieve the
growth needed at all times of the year.
Terraseeding is the first product where dormant season seeding provides the best chance at
thick full vegetation with little to no irrigation. After 2 years of natural reseeding through
good maintenance practices a stabile native environment is achieved.
